Car sales throughout 2022 soared compared to the same period last year. Despite growing 30.43 percent, the availability of micro chips or semiconductors is a problem for manufacturers.
Based on records from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries ( Gaikindo ), total domestic sales in April 2022 were 82,877 units. The realization fell 15.89 percent from the previous month. In March 2022, total domestic sales were 98,544 units.
Even though sales in April 2022 fell on a monthly basis ( month to month /mtm), it was still better than last year ( year to year /yty). Sales in 2021 will be 78,908 units. This means that there is an increase of 5.02 percent.
When viewed throughout the year to April ( year to date / ytd), sales in 2022 were 346,849 units. The realization jumped significantly from the same period last year, which was 30.43 percent (265,934 units).
Chairman I of Gaikindo Jongkie Sugiharto said that there were several reasons why sales last month fell on a monthly basis. In addition, he will evaluate throughout 2022.
"The relaxation of PPnBM [sales tax on luxury goods] ended in March, April, the fasting month, the short month, and problems with the supply of micro chips ," he said via instant message, Sunday (22/5/2022).
Jongkie did not explicitly explain the delay in the ability of industry players to produce new cars due to the lack of micro chips . However, he admits this is an obstacle for car manufacturers.
"Demand from consumers is still quite good, supply has problems, namely micro chips ," he explained.
Previously, the Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita admitted that he had intensely lobbied the microchip industry players to provide more of one of the important components of the vehicle.
"Since last year, I have lobbied intensely for chip industry players, both at home and abroad, to want to expand in Indonesia," he said when contacted by The Newbie, Wednesday (18/5/2022).
Agus explained that supply chain in the chip sector had already disrupted all automotive manufacturers, not only in Indonesia, but also in the world.
“This [inviting chip industry players to expand] is not easy. But the potential of the Indonesian market is huge," he explained.
