The termination of employment (PHK) faced by Shopee Global did not spread to Shopee Indonesia. This was confirmed by the Executive Director of Shopee Indonesia, Handhika Jahja.

"The adjustment steps taken in certain segments and markets will certainly not involve Shopee Indonesia," he said in an official statement, Wednesday (15/6/2022).

Shopee Indonesia, continued Handhika, continues to show good performance and Indonesia remains a priority market where it continues to develop its business to help more MSMEs and users in Indonesia feel the benefits of digital economic growth.

In Indonesia, Shopee employs more than 20,000 employees in various business lines such as Shopee, ShopeePay, and ShopeeFood and more than 50% have joined since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In fact, his party also continues to recruit the best talents to develop the Shopee Indonesia team. As a result, Shopee Indonesia is still actively recruiting digital talents, through the Sea Labs Indonesia program which was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in March 2022 which will build a team of 1,000 Indonesian digital talents, especially engineers and product managers , who will be ready to contribute. through technology.

"Shopee's mission in Indonesia remains the same, namely to create a better life for those who have not been served well, through technology by collaborating with various parties, including the Indonesian Government, to create various strategic partnerships to realize this mission," said Handhika.

He added, in the last 6 months, Shopee has also presented various initiatives to advance MSMEs in Indonesia, including the Shopee MSME Campus which is present on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi which has trained tens of thousands of local MSMEs in digital business skills. In addition, the Java in Paris program, which brings thousands of local MSME products at Shopee, is curated and can be sold in Paris.

Previously, it was reported that the e-commerce company owned by the Singapore-based Sea Group would terminate the employment of several of its employees in the ShopeeFood food delivery service and online in Southeast Asia. Shopee will also cut the number of its staff in Mexico, Argentina and Chile, as well as cross-border teams supporting the Spanish market, according to a company memo cited by CNA. Memo dated June 13, 2022, sent by Shopee Group President Chris Feng. 

"Given the increasing uncertainty in the broader economy, we believe it is prudent to make the difficult but important adjustments to improve our operational efficiency and focus our resources. This policy is to ensure that, as a business, we remain in the best position to continue to develop sustainably and ultimately to win," he wrote.

Feng also said the decision to lay off was made to optimize its operations in certain segments and markets. He also said Shopee would close its early-stage trial in Spain, after announcing plans to launch online in the country last October.

Previously, Shopee withdrew from the Indian retail market in March 2022, a few months after starting operations there. It was the second setback that month after Shopee decided to exit the French market.
