Sakura's presence is expected to be a game changer in the Japanese EV market.
The global alliance of Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. has finally launched the Kei Car product or a mini car with electric technology.
This second project is the first attempt. As a result, a lightweight electric car ( electric vehicle / EV) product was born named Sakura.
The second step is quite strategic. The reason is, currently the EV market in Japan is not very well established.
Not only that, the Kei Car segment is the largest market niche there. The portion of the mini car reaches 40 percent of the total vehicle population.
The EV market in Japan itself is facing penetration from automotive players such as Tesla and Hyundai. Both have very fast growth.
"I believe that [the new vehicle] that represents the alliance will be a game changer for electric vehicles in Japan," said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida, quoted from newsexplore.net, Saturday (21/5/2022).
The global alliance is planning a major investment over the next five years. The total investment of US$26 billion includes the development of EVs and mini cars.
In the early stages, after the launch of Sakura, Nissan, which previously had EV ammunition such as the Leaf and Ariya, will launch its new products in Japan. The price for Sakura is around 1.78 million yen, equivalent to IDR 212 million.
The EV product strategy of this global alliance reverses the current situation, where EV prices are very expensive. With products that are more minimalist and very cheap, Nissan and Mitsubishi are trying to grab a bigger market.
