Before becoming IKN's main transportation, first consider the advantages and disadvantages of an autonomous car

When the use of autonomous cars is massive and interconnected with road markings, traffic systems, and between vehicles, there are dangers lurking. In particular, regarding the hacking of digital devices.

The autonomous vehicle system that will be implemented by the National Capital City (IKN) of the Archipelago is considered to reduce accidents due to human error.  However, there are advantages and disadvantages.

Quoted from Agus Tjahajana Wirakusumah's book entitled "Automotive Industry for the Nation; Becoming a Major Player in the Era of Electric Cars", the US highway authority (NHTSA) noted that automation technology is expected to be able to erode the number of accidents that are more than 90 percent caused by human error.

“On the other hand, vehicle accidents are one of the biggest deaths in the world. In 2020, of all accidents in the world, at least 5 million people died and 50 million people suffered serious disabilities," the book reads as quoted by The Newbie, Saturday (21/5/2022).

Automation technology, explained Agus in his book, has the ability to avoid vehicles violating road markings, adjust speed according to regulations, to ensure the smallest risk in the event of a collision.

"So far, the technology is still being developed even though there are already several products, such as those produced by Tesla. The sophistication of this automated steering relies on the much greater reliability of AI [ artificial intelligence ]," he explained.

On the other hand, unmanned vehicles have advantages and disadvantages. In terms of profit, basically automation control technology has a vision to reduce the number of victims of road accidents.

Most of these accidents were triggered by the negligence of the driver which caused the victims not only to fellow vehicles, but often also created terror for pedestrian users.

In addition, the automation control technology is expected to be able to realize the suitability of driving methods with general road conditions and the suitability of traffic signs.

That way, road congestion that wastes fuel energy and the fuel subsidy budget can be controlled.

However, there are several weaknesses that are still a challenge in developing this technology. One of the main problems is the level of device security.

Automation technology currently relies more on digitization, the involvement of AI functions, and connectivity between vehicles.

All of these systems rely on interconnection and cross-linking of data collected by computers. This raises concerns that automation control technology will be very vulnerable to criminal acts, especially hacking terror.

In addition, it takes a long time to develop data and device reliability. The road situation is even more complex with a large population of vehicles. This will be very risky if the distribution of real time constrained.

"The reliability of the device and the compatibility between products with one another as well as with road technology is a very complex problem to create reliable automation control in cars," explained Agus.
