REVIEW The Silent Sea: Fresh Ideas, Bland Plot

The Silent Sea offers mystery drama and thriller with outer space. But, the plot presented is not interesting enough. (Netflix)

"If Bae Doona has played, her character must be the most correct!"

This is the message I sent via telepathy to Gong Yoo while watching The Silent Sea . I mean, didn't we learn from the Kingdom ? Half hoping that my message was actually heard by Captain Han Yun Jae. Like to forget, that I'm not a scriptwriter.

I watched The Silent Sea when my friends had finished it and gave their opinion. There is also a South China Morning Post journalist who became the subject of feelings for Korean netizens for giving a 1/5 rating for this ambitious project.

After watching, the rating is still too low for me. But that doesn't mean I don't understand why.

The Silent Sea indeed 'already' instilled high expectations. It is the drama - sci-fi first space themed produced by Korea. Not to mention, the abilities of the two main characters, Gong Yoo and Bae Doona, clearly can't be doubted.

Unfortunately, the acting of these two temperatures did not help the storyline of The Silent Sea much .

The Silent Sea is a drama adapted from a short film made by the director, Choi Hang Yong. He produced the short film as a requirement for his graduation from the School of Film, TV and Multimedia at the Korea National University of Arts in 2014.

If I think of The Silent Sea as a 37-minute short film, I can understand why it caught Jung Woo Sung's attention -- to the extent that the actor wanted to produce it in a drama format.

Maybe that’s the main reason, why as an audience, it feels like the plot is dragged along throughout the eight episodes. There are too many insignificant scenes and the conversation doesn't help to keep the audience interested in the story. But, the mystery on offer is too dear to miss. It feels great, if The Silent Sea is a drama that is 'extended'.

In short, The Silent Sea has fresh story ideas, but the plot feels bland.

Spoiler alert!

In the realm of Hollywood, the story of Earth in a dystopia and a failed space trip is nothing new. However, The Silent Sea has its own way of making the audience wonder - even if they are tired of questioning. The 'solutions' offered to deal with drought on Earth are quite admirable to me. In a sense, how did Choi Hang Yong come up with this idea?

However, on the way to the answer, the audience still can't 'feel' anything. He is the type of drama slow-burn that is stingy with rewards .

The director said that the trigger for his idea was our proximity to the moon -- so close, yet so far . We're close, but don't recognize him. Sadly, the story that is expected to 'close' us to the moon is also not present. The relationship between the experiment and the moon was not disclosed. It's just a layer of unsolved mysteries .

If you want to understand, you can understand. This ignorance is the result of a mission full of lies from the government, while the team must complete it with a deadline of only 24 hours. Perhaps, The Silent Sea could be more interesting if the number of episodes was more concise.

The scriptwriter, Park Eun Gyo, had previously confided that he had difficulty finding writing references, because Korea doesn't have many projects sci-fi . He admitted that it was a challenge for him to develop a short film set in space into an eight-part series.

Park Eun Gyo's deadlock can be felt while watching The Silent Sea . However, his efforts to provoke the audience to get excited again and again, should be appreciated. The promised thriller is quite executed. He also tries to present conflict through characters colliding with each other.

There is also a desire that the audience can have an emotional bond with the two main characters through various flashbacks. However, these efforts did not bring maximum results. As for the richness of the story, The Silent Sea cannot guarantee that the audience will not move from their seats. (*)
