The Indonesian POM Agency withdrew the distribution permit for Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream from France in Indonesia. press release BPOM that The Newbie received on Wednesday (20/7/2022).

The withdrawal of this distribution permit was carried out due to the discovery of Ethylene Oxide (EtO) at levels exceeding the permitted limits from the European Union (EU) in Haagen Dazs vanilla ice cream.

Withdrawal of distribution permit for vanilla ice cream Haagen-Dazs in Indonesia stems from a voluntary recall circular by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) on Thursday (7/7/2022).

The products that were withdrawn from the market were Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream with pint and mini cup sizes of 100 milliliters and 473 milliliters. Including Haagen-Dazs ice cream vanilla flavor pack bulk of 9.46 liters

Seeing this, BPOM also instructs importers to temporarily stop the circulation of other Haagen-Dazs brand ice cream products containing vanilla flavor until the product is confirmed to be safe.

Meanwhile, other Haagen-Dazs products registered with BPOM can still be circulated in Indonesia.

The discovery of EtO in food products is a new issue initiated by the European Commission Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (EURASFF) in 2020.

However, at that time the Codex Allimentarius Commission (CAC) as an international organization under WHO/FAO had not regulated the maximum limit for EtO residues so that the arrangements in each country varied.

Currently, BPOM is still conducting a review process related to EtO policy in Indonesia, monitoring developments on international food safety standards, and testing the level of EtO exposure in food products.

"If the public finds that the Haagen-Dazs brand ice cream product with a vanilla flavor variant and/or a variant with a composition containing vanilla flavoring is still circulating, they should report it to the POM through the HALOBPOM Contact Center or the Consumer Complaints Service Unit (ULPK) Balai Besar/Balai/ POM workshops throughout Indonesia," wrote release on Tuesday (19/7/2022).

To note, Ethylon Oxide is a pesticide that functions as a fumigant.

According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary, (KBBI) this pesticide is volatile and the vapor is usually used to eradicate living bodies.

The recall of Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream was not only carried out in Indonesia, but also in Singapore on Friday (8/7/2022).

Adding from the page of The Straits Times, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) asked importers of Frosts Food & Begerage to recall a pint and Classic Collection Mini Cups.

"Although there is no immediate risk when consuming food contaminated with low levels of ethylan oxide, long-term exposure can cause health problems," the SFA said.
