'Obi-Wan: Kenobi': Dark Events in Fortress Inquisitorius

Episode 4 of Obi-Wan Kenobi shows live action from famous locations in Star Wars .

In his quest to save Leia Organa (Vivien Lyra Blair) from Inquisitor Reva (Moses Ingram), Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Tala (Indira Varma) venture into Fortress Inquisitorius, the Inquisitor's headquarters. But Kenobi instead discovers a dark secret.

During the Obi-Wan Kenobi period, Fortress Inquisitorius is located on Nur, a water moon in the Mustafar system. That's where Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) himself lives in his fortress, Fortress Vader.

Mustafar is also known as the place where Vader fell to Kenobi's sword in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith , and chose the Dark Lord as his seat of power because of the Dark Side nexus that lay beneath his fortress, allowing him to reminisce about his failure to kill his former mentor.

From a strategic point of view, building the Inquisitor program on Nur was the best scenario for the Empire. First, it is quite close to Darth Vader's grasp. After Ben, Leia and Tala escaped from the fort in Episode 4 of Obi-Wan Kenobi , Vader was able to quickly get there and was furious at Reva.

Second, Nur is a water planet. Fortress Inquisitorius consisted of a single spike piercing out of the ocean that pierced the entire moon, with most of its infrastructure submerged. This is the main entrance to the base, as well as the only exit, and it is where most of the stationed military contingents are available.

The submerged corridor was the Inquisitor's headquarters itself, complete with meeting rooms, dojos and torture chambers.

However, the Inquisitorius was not always the home of the Inquisitor program. When it started, shortly after Order 66 was issued, the Inquisitor's base of operations was in Coruscant. There, they were trained by Vader himself in the art of hunting and killing Jedi.

In Charles Soule's 2017 Star Wars comic Darth Vader, two of the Inquisitor's training there go rogue after chasing former Jedi Master Eeth Koth through the streets of the Empire's capital in chronological year 14 BBY.

In 2019, Fortress Inquisitorius emerged from the comics to the big screen via spinoff Star Wars , the game Jedi: Fallen Order . Set in the same year as the aforementioned Darth Vader comic, the game develops a dark aura for the fort.

It also tells one of the saddest and most tragic stories in the franchise. One of the most violent Inquisitors, Second Sister (Elizabeth Grullón) joins the program after her former master, Jedi Cere Junda (Debra Wilson), reveals her location during torture. That puts him on a path of ultimate revenge against Junda as well as against Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan).

The story didn't end well for Second Sister, despite being among the many fan-favorite Star Wars villains. After finally Kestis and Junda were trapped in the Inquisitorius Fortress, Second Sister was executed by Darth Vader.

So, Obi-Wan Kenobi is actually the site of the third major appearance by Fortress Inquisitorius in the new canon of Star Wars . And this series does a great job of building further on the tragic history of the place.

The most haunting aspect of this passage is the discovery of the "graveyard" for the defeated Jedi. In this terrifying corridor, the bodies of Obi-wan's comrades are kept. There are two famous bodies. The first belongs to Jedi Master Tera Sinube, one of the oldest in the Jedi Order.

The last body Kenobi sees in this corridor is that of an unnamed young Jedi, still wearing his training helmet, which brings us to theories about Reva's dark past. (*)
