4 Eligible Conditions for Cows and Goats for Eid Al-Adha Sacrifice

A veterinarian and livestock expert at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) Supratikno said that everyone who wants to buy sacrificial animals must carefully identify the characteristics of appropriate livestock.

This is not only because of the quality of the meat that will be distributed, but also because of the foot and mouth disease (FMD) which is currently attacking livestock in Indonesia.

Tikno explained, there are at least four conditions or characteristics that must be met by livestock for sacrifice.

1. Healthy sacrificial animals

The health condition of livestock is the main aspect that must be considered before deciding to buy.

"For cloud people, being healthy means that the important thing is that they (livestock) are still active, moving, they still want to eat, their hair is shiny, and they are reactive when approached," said Tikno when contacted by The Newbie news on Tuesday (7/6/2022) .

If you want to be examined further, the characteristics of a healthy goat or cow, have a normal body temperature with a temperature of 38 to 40 degrees Celsius.

"The body openings are clean, the mouth is clean, the eyes are clean, the nose is clean, the anus is clean, these are the characteristics of healthy cattle," he said.

However, considering the FMD outbreak that is currently infecting livestock in Indonesia, the healthy requirements for sacrificial livestock have been relaxed.

This is done because it sees the possibility of livestock contracting the disease after being purchased from the farm.

"For this year, cows and goats can still be used as sacrificial animals even though they are in the mild category of PMK," he said.

FMD in the mild category can be seen from his body shape which is still fat, not limp, only a little saliva comes out of his mouth, and his nails don't come off.

"It's already in the MUI fatwa number 37 of 2022," he said.

2. The sacrificial animal is old enough

The requirements for the adequacy of the age of the sacrificial animal that are commonly known are one year for the age of a goat or sheep, and two years for the age of a cow or buffalo.

But Tikno said the age of the livestock in the form of numbers was not a determining factor in the eligibility of the sacrifice.

According to him, there are three categories for determining the age of livestock for sacrifice, namely musinnah , saniah, and jadza'ah.

The first category is musinnah, by looking at the cattle's teeth that have changed from milk teeth to permanent teeth, regardless of the age of the cattle's birth calculation.

"Now there are goats that feed on pellets, they are two years old and haven't changed their teeth, unlike goats or sheep that eat grass, their teeth fall out quickly, even though it hasn't even been a year since they have changed their teeth," he said.

If the first category of livestock is difficult to obtain, then it can be based on the second category, namely saniah.

In the saniah , the livestock that can be used as sacrificial animals are the livestock that are one year old and have entered the second year.

"This means that a goat or sheep is 13-14 months old, if a cow is two years old, it means that it is 25-26 months old," he said.

If there are still problems with the requirements for the saniah category, it can be based on the third category, namely jadza'ah.

"Jadza'ah is a fat-tailed lamb that is even six months old, so it's more than seven months old. But that's for emergencies only," he said.

3. There is no defect in the sacrificial animal

Cattle with the non-disabled category in question are not reducing the amount of meat, not having torn ears, not being blind, and not being crippled.

"If he (cattle) is lame or blind, automatically they can't go to find food on their own, so he will be thin," he said.

In order to ensure the condition of livestock, buyers can also ask for a certificate of animal health before buying livestock.

4. Fat

Cattle that are fat because they are healthy and eat a lot will produce good quality meat. This makes the quantity of meat when shared will increase.

Before buying sacrificial cattle, make sure the cattle are fat because they are full of meat, not because they are scalded with water, or have worms.
