What Coconut Milk Can Be Replaced With Milk To Cook Indonesian Food?

In addition to the strong aroma of spices, Indonesian cuisine is also famous for its savory taste that comes from coconut milk.

Some typical Indonesian foods made using a mixture of coconut milk are soto, opor, and lontong vegetables.

The color and consistency of coconut milk is similar to liquid milk. This characteristic makes milk often used as a substitute for coconut milk to make various dishes.

However, can coconut milk be replaced with milk to make Indonesian food?

"It's suitable for all foods, as long as the comparisons are okay," said Sisca Soewitomo, an Indonesian culinary expert.

chef Indonesian food , Chef Yongki Gunawan, also shared a similar opinion.

According to him, there is no problem using milk as a substitute for coconut milk to make Indonesian specialties.

"Back in America, I thought coconut milk was expensive. So I used milk, no problem," said Yongki .

Sisca and Yongki agree that any type of liquid milk is suitable as a substitute for coconut milk, be it animal milk or vegetable milk.

"Yesterday I made rice cake without using coconut milk, using soy milk. No one knows that it doesn't use coconut milk because it tastes similar," explained Yongki.

Even so, Yongki prefers to use plant-based milk as a substitute for coconut milk.

"Actually, it's okay to use other types of milk, only if soy milk is plant-based, obviously low in fat," said Yongki.
