Toyota Motor Corporation has restarted production at its factory in Changchun, China after more than a month halting production due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Reporting from Hindustan Times Auto , production gradually resumed on Sunday (2/5/2022) and normal production is scheduled to start Thursday (4/5/2022) at the RAV4 SUV maker's factory in Jilin province in northeast China. This was revealed by a spokesman for Toyota Shiori Hashimoto.
Meanwhile, when asked about how many production units were affected by this production stoppage, Toyota refused to answer.
Previously, the Changchun city government said the restrictions were aimed at stemming the spread of COVID-19 in China, and these restrictions have also disrupted some business operations since March.
On Sunday, the Changchun government began allowing factory production and people's lives to return to normal.
The cessation of production also continues a shortage in the supply chain of auto components that has been in crisis since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This has led to longer shortages of component materials and delays in delivery.
Given the scale of Toyota's production as the world's number one automaker in 2021, the production shutdown in Changchun is not expected to reduce total output by 2022.
Toyota also managed to exceed its sales target for the fiscal year to March 2022 by 9.51 million units. This achievement is the second highest during Toyota's production
For information, it's not only Toyota that has restarted Changchun's production, German car manufacturer Volkswagen AG and several other manufacturers have restarted production.
