Like the US, Canada will also block Huawei and ZTE

After the United States, Canada plans to block Huawei technology in its country. Not only Huawei, Canada will also block another Chinese company, ZTE.

The blocking was carried out because Canada considered the Chinese state-owned telecommunications company a threat to its country's national security.

According to an AP News report, wireless internet service providers in Canada will be banned from installing Huawei technology to deploy 5G networks.

"We plan to ban Huawei and ZTE from entering our 5G network," said Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne.

As a result, technology companies that have used 5G equipment from Huawei and ZTE are required to remove these components by June 2024, without receiving any compensation from the state.

The same is true for companies that have been using 4G communication equipment from Huawei and ZTE. Canada will ask the company to remove components from the two manufacturers by the end of 2027.

"Internet providers that have installed this equipment (Huawei and ZTE) will be asked to stop and remove it, according to the plan we announced today," added Champagne.

A spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Canada said the allegations of national security threats leveled at Huawei were "a pretext for political manipulation".

The Chinese embassy also said Canada was working with the US to put pressure on Chinese companies.

It has long been considered

The blocking of Huawei and ZTE in Canada has been eagerly awaited, especially for allied countries, such as the United States. Canada is the only country in the intelligence alliance, Five Eyes, that has not banned or restricted the use of Huawei equipment in its 5G network.

Meanwhile, other members, namely the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand, have already banned the use of Huawei technology in their respective countries. Actually, Canada has been considering blocking Huawei since last September 2018.

However, political tensions between the two countries escalated, after in December of the same year, Huawei's Chief Financial Officer, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested in Canada on a warrant from the US. The incident occurred shortly after the US blacklisted Huawei.

In retaliation, two Canadians, former diplomat Michael Spavor and businessman Michael Kovrig, were arrested in Beijing, China on charges of espionage. Since then, Canada-China bilateral relations have been strained.

Until finally, last September, Meng was released, as were two Canadians imprisoned in China.

old player

Huawei has long played a key role in Canada's wireless networks. In 2008, the Chinese company won its first major project from telcos Bell Canada Enterprise/BCE and Telus in North America.

An important contract that helped strengthen Huawei's reputation as a competitive global player. The deal paved the way for Huawei to become a key supplier to Canada's largest telecommunications company over the next decade.

Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Huawei, Lykhan Velshi said that his party was still waiting until Canada actually made a statement regarding the type of national threat posed by Huawei.

Compiled from Reuters, Friday (20/5/2022), until now Huawei still has 1,500 employees in Canada who are still actively working. Most of them work in research and development, as well as sales of products such as mobile phones.

The US became the first country to block Huawei and ZTEm as well as several other Chinese companies. The entry of Huawei in the black list or entity list in the US, started with accusations that Huawei was working as a Chinese spy.

The accusations make the US even more worried, considering that Huawei has an extensive network to supply communication equipment to various operators spread across various countries.

Now, Canada's military leadership seems to agree with the US opinion. However, Canada's intelligence and signaling services have yet to agree on the best solution to deal with Huawei.
