Last year, the automotive trade balance surplus reached US$1.19 billion, this year it was only US$127.1 million. Industry Independence Questioned?

Entering the beginning of this year, the automotive trade surplus, which combines export activities with the value of imports, continued to erode. From the level of the equivalent of billions of dollars, until April that achievement only fell to the level of hundreds of millions.

Based on detailed data on the export-import of automotive products compiled in HS 87, it reflects a trade surplus that is getting thinner in the January-April period this year.

Based on the data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the export value for the first four months of this year reached US$3.29 billion. At the same time, imports of motor vehicle products and parts thereof reached US$3.16 billion.

As a result, during the first four months of this year, the automotive trade surplus that was successfully packaged reached US$127.16 million. The performance was far lower than the surplus in the same period last year. 

During January-April 2021, the total export value reached US$3.12 billion. On the other hand, the import value in the same period was US$1.93 billion, so the surplus was recorded at US$1.19 billion.

These statistics reflect a very high stretch of imports at the beginning of this year. Unfortunately, this cannot be accompanied by a surge in exports.

In terms of automotive products, the largest import still comes from freight vehicles with a GVW of more than 45 tons in intact form. The total import value reached US$304.74 million during the period from January to April this year.

Next comes from special goods vehicle products such as hooklifts and pickups, weighing less than 5 tons. Total imports of these products reached US$146.66 million during the first four months of this year.

The same product also makes up the largest import contribution with different types, which weigh more than 24 tons. The total imports from India, China, Sweden, France and Germany reached US$106.4 million.

One of the import contributors is the import of scooter motorcycle components and accessories (HS 8714). The import value reached US$105.47 million, with China as the biggest contributor, followed by Thailand and Japan.
