Aftershocks with a 5.7 Magnitude Again Shake Banten

 


Aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.7 again occurred in the waters south of Banten on Friday afternoon (14/1/2022), the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency ( BMKG ) announced. The earthquake also did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

As described by the BMKG in its official Twitter account, this aftershock occurred Friday afternoon at around 16.49 WIB or approximately 44 minutes after the first earthquake.

This aftershock was centered at a depth of 10 km and its epicenter was still at sea, about 54 kilometers southwest of Sumur, Banten. This aftershock was also felt as far as Jakarta and the surrounding area.

"There is no potential for a tsunami," said BMKG in his tease. 

It was previously reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 - which was later updated to 6.6 - has rocked Banten, Jakarta and parts of West Java. The earthquake was centered at sea, about 52 kilometers from Sumur, Banten. The earthquake occurred at around 16.05 WIB.

The earthquake, which occurred at the end of working hours, caused office workers in Jakarta and its surroundings to scatter out of their respective buildings.

The BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator, Daryono explained that the 6.6 earthquake was associated with the source of the Sunda Strait megathrust earthquake.

"Update: Magnitude 6.6 at a depth of 40 km, the mechanism of the thrusting source is associated with the source of the Sunda Strait megathrust earthquake," explained Daryono.
