The world's first SMS , which reads Merry Christmas or Merry Christmas , was sold at an auction for 107,000 euros or around Rp. 1.7 billion which was held Tuesday (12/22/2021). The SMS was sold as an NFT or non-fungible token by an auction house in Paris, France.

The SMS was sent on December 3, 1992. The auctioneer was the British telecommunications company, Vodafone, as reported by Reuters.

It was Vodafone engineer, Neil Papworth who sent the SMS. The short message was received by a manager in the UK using a 2 kg Orbitel branded phone.

"It was the end of the year, so he sent a message saying Merry Christmas," explains Maximilien Aguttes of auction house Aguttes Auction House.

NFT is one type of digital asset that is on the rise in recent times. Several artworks and digital images, including those of Indonesian artist Syahrini, were sold as NFTs this month.

Started trading since 2017, NFTs are usually digital objects such as images, videos, music and text that are on the blockchain. Each NFT has a unique digital signature so it cannot be faked.

The first SMS buyer in the world will receive a replica of the NFT he bought. Proceeds from this auction will be donated to UNHCR, the international organization responsible for refugees.
