In the previous first leg, both teams drew 1-1. The Indonesian national team took the lead through Witan Sulaeman, before Singapore evened the score in the second half through Ikhsan Fandi.

The semifinals 2020 AFF Cup do not recognize the away goal advantage. If the second leg is again completed with a draw, then the semifinal match will continue to 2x15 minute extra rounds and a penalty shoot-out if necessary.
Coach Shin Tae-yong prepared his team well. Shin insisted that Evan Dimas and his teammates beat Singapore in the normal 90 minutes of the match.
"There is a possibility that the result of the match will be decided on a penalty shootout, but it cannot go there. I have not thought about who will be the penalty taker if that happens," he said, quoting Antara.
