Ajay Bakshi (Shahrukh Khan), is a successful reporter and works for a well-known news channel.
His father was a freedom fighter who lived on a measly pension. Ajay thinks that his father's ideals & sacrifices gave him nothing. He did not respect his father's ideals, which his father still holds.
A rival news channel ropes in Ria Banerjee (Juhi Chawla) as the answer. Ria is the opposite of Ajay & uses her charm to get her work done.
Pappu Junior aka Choti (Johnny Lever) is a don who will soon be expelled from his own gang, due to his inability to make it big in the criminal world.
Ajay approaches Choti with an offer, orchestrating a fake attack on the minister's brother-in-law Ramakant (Shakti Kapoor) (Mahavir Shah) on national TV.
The minister's brother-in-law is shot dead by an assailant named Mohan Joshi (Paresh Rawal). When Ajay finds out that he is not Choti's subordinate, he panics.
Ria finds out about Ajay & Choti's deal, but they decide to help each other.
Minister Ramakant took advantage of the death of his brother-in-law to gain votes and sympathy, he staged a pogrom.
In turn, Mohan was arrested, but did not open his mouth once during the police torture.
To avoid public unrest, Police Commissioner (Anjan Srivastav) states that Mohan is a terrorist working for an unknown terror organization. Meanwhile, Mohan somehow escapes from prison.
Ajay and Ria who are arguing in their car, don't realize that Mohan is hiding in the same car.
Mohan then greets them, whereupon Ajay accuses him of being a terrorist. Mohan gets angry & tells him he is not a terrorist.
Mohan continues to tell his story. Mohan had a sick wife (Neena Kulkarni) as well as a now deceased daughter.
Mohan said his daughter died from the trauma she endured after being raped while going for an interview for a secretarial job.
The helpless Mohan runs from door to door for justice. But out of desperation, he took the initiative to punish with his own hands.
Ajay and Ria are shaken by his confession and decide to help Mohan.
Ajay hands the videotape of this confession to his boss and Ajay's uncle, Kaka (Satish Shah).
Unfortunately, the minister has joined hands with his rival opposition minister, Mushran (Govind Namdeo) as he fears their secret will be exposed if Mohan surrenders.
Similarly, Ajay's boss also conspires with Ria's boss (Dalip Tahil) after learning about the tape.
The ministers and the head of the news channel came together to trick Ajay and Ria into giving them the tape.
After they give the tape, Ajay realizes that it was just a ruse. He also devised a plan to take the tape back
With the help of Ria and Choti, he manages to get the tape.
Here Mohan has been arrested by the police and sent to be hanged in public. However, Ajay manages to broadcast Mohan's confession just an hour before his execution and cries asking the nation to stop the injustice.
The ministers and police tried to prevent the protesters from coming to the execution site by setting up police barricades as entrances and the police and chief inspector (Vishwajeet Pradhan) beating Ajay.
The ACP decides to join forces with Ajay and Ria, thereby neutralizing the police barricades.
Just seconds before the execution, Ajay and the protesters manage to save Mohan and beat the politicians.
Mohan's execution is canceled and Ria proposes to Ajay in front of the protesters.
