Twenty-Five Twenty-One brings the old wounds of 1997 South Korea to the laca screen. Through the perspective of the young people who are affected, Twenty-Five Twenty-One tells the story of South Korea's economic condition in 1998 -- one year after South Korea's cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to overcome the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.
According to The World Bank, the collaboration between South Korea and the IMF did succeed in saving the Ginseng Country from the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. However, the impact was felt several years later. It is noted that the unemployment rate tripled from 2.05 percent in 1997, to 6.96 percent in 1999.
Well , Twenty-Five Twenty-One presents us with a story about young people who find new goals and grow, even though their dreams are snatched away. Set in 1998, Twenty-Five Twenty-One mainly tells the story of Baek Yi Jin (Nam Joo Hyuk) and Na Hee Do (Kim Tae Ri). The two first met when they were 22 and 18 years old, then fell in love at the age of 25 and 21.
Na Hee Do is a fencer whose high school team was disbanded due to the IMF crisis. Even though his dream seems to have run aground, he is determined to face the future without giving up.
Baek Yi Jin is the eldest son of a broken family due to the IMF crisis. Despite his difficult background, Baek Yi Jin works hard to become a reporter.
Other characters that will appear in Twenty-Five Twenty-One are Go Yoo Rim (Bona WJSN) and Moon Ji Woong (Choi Hyun Wook).
Go Yoo Rim is a national team fencer and is Na Hee Do's rival. Even though he has a strong charisma as a fencer, he turns into a cute and adorable person as soon as he takes off his fencing uniform.
Meanwhile, Moon Ji Woong is a star in Cyworld -- Cyworld's most popular social media in that era. He was determined to become a Today's Member in order to make his name bigger.
Twenty-Five Twenty-One will premiere on tvN replacing Bulgasal on February 12. (*)
